Villagers were shocked after a monkey-like piglet [ferkel, anm.d.red.] was born in China.

Curious locals flocked to the home of owner Feng Changlin after news of the piglet spread in Fengzhang village, Xiping township.

He says the piglet looks just like a monkey, with two thin lips, a small nose and two big eyes. Its rear legs are also much longer than its forelegs, causing it to jump instead of walk.

"It's hideous. No one will be willing to buy it, and it scares the family to even look at it!" Feng told Oriental Today.

Samsung demos 82” 2160p HDTV

Los Angeles (CA) – Samsung draws attention at this year’s Society for Information Display (SID) International Symposium with a 82” Quad HDTV that offers four times the resolution of today’s 1080p high definition TVs.

The prototype display has a massive 82” size and features a resolution of 3820x2160 pixels, which results in a total screen resolution of 8.3 megapixels. Current 1080p TVs run at 1920x1080 pixels or 2.1 megapixels. According to the manufacturer, the TV integrates a red/green/blue LED backlight, which raises the color saturation to 150%. The image refresh rate is 120 Hz.

Environmentalist lawyers are threatening to sue Apple in 60 days if the iconic US company doesn't make iPhones greener or warn buyers of toxins in the devices.

The Center for Environmental Health in Oakland, California, sent Apple notice on Monday after environmental activist group Greenpeace released a scientific analysis of how Earth-friendly iPhones are.

In a YouTube video posted on the Greenpeace website, scientist David Santillo claims that iPhones contain dangerous levels of bromine, chlorine and "phthalates", chemical compounds used to increase the flexibility of plastic.

The level of phthalate esters, a chemical linked to birth defects, in plastic coating of iPhone earphone wires is greater than that allowed in toys or childcare items sold in Europe, according to Greenpeace.

"If a pregnant woman is winding and unwinding that cord a number of times each day, like we all would, she is getting exposed to this chemical," the centre's chief executive Michael Green said.

"That is a big piece of our concern."

In the video, which starts with Apple chief executive Steve Jobs ebulliently announcing the iPhone launch, Santillo says: "Electronics companies have traditionally relied on the cool clean image of their devices in order to sell them.

"What we have found over the years is that once you get behind that shiny cover the story is very different."

The notice sent to Apple and the California state attorney general gives the non-profit environmental law group legal standing to sue Apple in 60 days.

A lawsuit could compel Apple to put warnings on iPhone packaging but doesn't require the renowned maker of iPods and Macintosh computers to recall devices or alter the composition of models yet to be sold.

"There are chemicals in some of the parts that come with the iPhone that are well known in California to cause birth defects," Green said. "We want those chemicals out."

The centre's experience in "hundreds of different cases" is that companies prefer to get rid of offending chemicals rather than taint images of brands with health warnings, according to Green.

"No sense warning people when they can just use different chemicals to make it so no one is exposed to toxins," Green said.

"It's a better business decision. Especially with Apple, because its brand is so valuable."

Apple declined to discuss the matter on the grounds it doesn't comment on pending litigation.

Apple products conform to rigorous standards set in the European Union and the Northern California company has vowed to eliminate PVC and bromines connected to fire retardants from its model line by the end of the year.

Environmentalists contend that the greening of Apple is long overdue, with the company lagging behind rivals when it comes to eliminating toxins and supporting recycling or safe disposal of products.

Greenpeace also criticized Apple for having batteries glued and soldered into iPhones, making it harder to replace, recycle or properly dispose of the chemically hazardous power packs.

Green said Apple might need to heighten oversight of overseas manufacturers it contracts to make iPhones to make certain environmental goals are met.

Memristor !!!!!

http://www.heise.de/newsticker/HP-erfindet-elektrischen-Widerstand-mit-Gedaechtnis--/meldung/107273, http://www.heise.de/tp/r4/artikel/27/27831/1.html

Only the Creepiest Photos Ever Taken

Mourning is a strange thing, and different cultures deal with it in vastly different ways. But there’s a reason people associate the Victorians above all with morbidity and death, and one of them is memento mori like this:postmortem2.jpg

The fact is, postmortem photographs like this were taken more than any other kind of photograph in the Victorian era — especially in the U.S. — and in many cases these carefully-arranged, meticulously staged pictures were the only ones ever taken of their subjects. From Stanley Burns’ book Sleeping Beauty: Memorial Photography in America:

These photographs were a common aspect of American culture, a part of the mourning and memorialization process. Surviving families were proud of these images and hung them in their homes, sent copies to friends and relatives, wore them as lockets or carried them as pocket mirrors. Nineteenth-century Americans knew how to respond to these images. Today there is no culturally normative response to postmortem photographs.

So, given your lack of a “culturally normative response” to these pictures, dear reader, we advise the faint of heart among you to click elsewhere.

“Child in Coffin at the Death Room”

child.jpg

From PBS.com: “This portrait appears to have been taken in the formal parlor of a family home. The parlor, or “death room,” was an important part of funerary rituals for most of the 19th century, the place where deceased family members were laid out for final respects. This image dates to c. 1890-1905, a time when many funerals were still taking place at home. Soon, however, death would begin to leave the home and by end of World War I most Americans will receive their health care in doctor’s offices and hospitals and most funerals will take place in funeral homes. As the funeral “parlor” came into vogue, the home parlor was rechristened a “living room.” A 1910 issue of Ladies Home Journal declared the “death room” to be a term of the past.”

Also, did you notice the strange silhouette on the right side of the picture? That’s the photographer’s assistant, holding the casket lid open for the shot.

brothers.jpg

For me, though, more intriguing than the dead are the living who pose with them — usually stoic and reserved, it’s the little bit of emotion their faces betray that make these portraits so compelling … and heartbreaking. (Above and below: siblings with their brothers.)

brother.jpg

Another common theme in Victorian-era postmortem photography was the staged scene of mourning, which was often highly melodramatic, like this one, “Orphans at Their Mother’s Grave”:

grave.jpg

The photograph above also reveals another Victorian preoccupation: spirit photography. Likely a double-exposure featuring an “actress” portraying the childrens’ mother, this style seems to me a highly theatrical way to deal with one’s grief.

newspaper.jpg

Another style was the photograph in which the dead were posed to look alive — the first in this series, at the top of this post, is an “eyes-open” example. The use of props like this man’s newspaper was less common; perhaps it was included to distract from the unnatural rigidness of his hands, among other giveaways.

German schoolboy, 13, corrects NASA's asteroid figures

A 13-year-old German schoolboy corrected NASAs estimates on the chances of an asteroid colliding with Earth a German newspaper reported Tuesday after spotting the boffins had miscalculated the probability.
Nico Marquardt used telescopic findings from the Institute of Astrophysics in Potsdam (AIP) to calculate that there was a 1 in 450 chance that the Apophis asteroid will collide with Earth.
NASA had previously estimated the chances at only 1 in 45,000 but told its sister organisation, the European Space Agency (ESA), that the young whizzkid had got it right.
The schoolboy took into consideration the risk of Apophis running into one or more of the 40,000 satellites orbiting Earth during its path close to the planet on April 13 2029.
Those satellites travel at 3.07 kilometres a second (1.9 miles), at up to 35,880 kilometres above earth -- and the Apophis asteroid will pass by earth at a distance of 32,500 kilometres.
If the asteroid strikes a satellite in 2029, that will change its trajectory making it hit earth on its next orbit in 2036.
Both NASA and Marquardt agree that if the asteroid does collide with earth, it will create a ball of iron and iridium 320 metres (1049 feet) wide and weighing 200 billion tonnes, which will crash into the Atlantic Ocean.
The shockwaves from that would create huge tsunami waves, destroying both coastlines and inland areas, whilst creating a thick cloud of dust that would darken the skies indefinitely.
